Intermittent Fasting: Approved Beverages

So many of my clients ask me what can they drink while fasting. There is so much misinformation out there about what is approved. Simply put, there are only four approved beverages allowed during a fast:

  • Black Coffee (no sweeteners of any kind, no cream or milk of any kind).

  • Black Tea (unsweetened, plain black or earl grey).

  • Green Tea (unsweetened; ingredients should read green tea only).

The reason you can’t have flavorings, sweeteners, or creamers is that our body will confuse these items for food and initiate digestion and raise insulin. YOU DON’T WANT THIS! Any interruption in the fasting process that leads the body to start digestion or raise insulin will break the fast.

My suggestion is to start drinking plain black coffee (1/2 decaf or diluted with water) or tea. It may take some getting used to, but you will see that it really supports the transition into everyday fasting.
